My Work

Traditional, Japanese Ceramics

Statement

When I work with clay, I want to honor its nature, including the irregularities of the clay body and flow of the glaze.

Making ceramics for the table also draws upon my love for Japanese tea ceremony where we create an intimate setting with small movements to ‘wake up’ the spirit.

My experience as a chef also influences my work. Just as ingredients come into season through the year, I create my tableware to also revolve around these changes. I make pieces for use in the summer and spring with shapes that are open and colors that are cool. In winter and fall, I make forms are more narrow and closed and glazed in earth tones.

I want to create pieces that awaken all five senses and that people will use and love everyday.
